Have you ever been told that if you want to earn a promotion…all you need to do is put your head down, do the hard work, and after 5 years, you’ll get it?
Let me save you some hard work and aggravation.
I’ve talked to hundreds of tech managers who were sold this lie.
This lie that “hard work speaks for itself.”
This lie that “if you work here for 5 years, you’ll get a promotion.”
So they bought into that strategy. They go to work and do the best they can. And heaven forbid they share their successes with anyone! Oh no, they don’t want to appear overly confident. Hard work is enough. It speaks for itself.
See, they believed that if they just worked hard (and never promoted themselves)…then, about 3–5 years later their boss would say, “Congratulations! You’re promoted to Director! And you get a 30% raise! Great job.”
I mean, that’s what they tell you, right?
But what really happens?
Nothing. No recognition. No promotions. No raises. Maybe for a minute, you get some pats on the back and words of thanks, but that won’t last because the truth is, hard work does NOT speak for itself.
If you follow the “head down, stay quiet” strategy you’re not going to get recognized. You’re going to end up burned out and stressed out. And because you’re not going to be earning regular raises, you’re going to LOSE money! Because you’re not even keeping up with inflation.
Here how to make sure this doesn’t happen to you…
Ask yourself this ONE question: What would happen if I stopped believing that hard work speaks for itself…and started evangelizing my excellence instead?
I continue to work smart AND I celebrate my team’s successes. I make it known — from a place of pride and gratitude — how awesome my team is. I share this with my boss, his boss, and all of the key org. decision makers.
If you do this consistently & effectively, within a matter months you WILL start to get recognized. Not just for the work you’re already doing but also for the work they KNOW you’re GOING to do.
And because you’re adding next-level value, you’ll earn that promotion. And the raise that comes with it.
The trouble is, consistently & effectively evangelizing your excellence is not easy to do. You need strategies, systems, and support that will help you do it with YOUR team, given YOUR circumstances.
That’s where we come in. If you’re ready to give up the “hard work speaks for itself” mentality and finally get recognized at work, so you can reap the rewards you deserve (and earn them for your team as well), then let’s have a conversation.
