The Rules of the Tech Career Game
If you’re reading this, you’re playing the Tech Career Game and you want to win!
To win, you have to know the rules.
If you don’t know the rules about dribbling in basketball, you’ll never win.
If you don’t know the rules about betting in poker, you’ll never win.
If you don’t know the rules about card management in Munchkin, you’ll never win.
And that’s okay if you don’t care about winning.
My 11-year-old son doesn’t care about winning in basketball. He breaks the dribbling rules ALL the time.
But he doesn’t care. He just wants to have fun.
But he REALLY cares about winning Munchkin. So you bet he knows the rules inside out!
So…
What are the rules of the Tech Career Game?
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know what NOT to do!
You know these are NOT the rules:
— -Make sure you keep up-leveling your tech skills as you climb the leadership ladder! (WRONG!)
— -The only way to get a significant raise is to move to another job! (FALSE!)
— -Keep your head down and do the work. Promoting yourself will make you look like an egotistical snob. (NOPE!)
— -Read as many books about leadership as you can! (OMG NO WAY!)
— -Your techie friends are the best sources of career advice. (THEY’RE NOT!)
Now that we’re clear what the rules AREN’T…
…what ARE they???
Again, this’ll look familiar for long-time followers but even you’ll benefit from seeing them all in one place.
Rule #1: Commit to leading assertively with total integrity and authenticity
Rule #2: Systematize your career-building process
Rule #3: Evangelize your excellence
Rule #4: Invest in mentoring
You cannot skip ANY of these.
You can do 2, 3, and 4. But if you skip 1, your heart’s not really in it. Your commitment to serve isn’t really there. And people can smell inauthenticity from a mile away.
You can do 1, 3, and 4. But if you skip 2, you have no focus. No North Star. And you’ll be running in circles in your tech career.
You can do 1, 2, and 4. But if you skip 3, you’re never going to earn that raise or promotion because the decision-makers won’t know that you want it or why you want it.
You can do 1, 2, and 3. But if you skip 4, you’re leaving loads of opportunities on the table. Without investing in yourself, you have no skin in the game. Without a team of expert mentors, you’ll never tap into your full potential.
