⚠️Warning, cautionary tale ahead.
Earlier this week I had a call with That Guy.
You know the type, all swagger in a cheap suit. 🕺
And here’s the truth: We ALL have elements of That Guy in ourselves and his story could be anyone’s when they fall into the same trap.
So as I tell his tale, ask yourself with bold honesty: When have I shown up like this? 🤔
That Guy was on the call telling me how great his life is like he’s talking to his Instagram followers.
Once we dig through the layers of made-for-Facebook “wins” we see the truth: That Guy’s dream life was a facade.
His growth stalled years ago and he’s been too ashamed to admit it. His last substantial raise was 5 years, 2 mortgages, and a divorce ago. 😳 The same numbers that looked like a win back then aren’t even covering monthly expenses now.
He hasn’t bought himself a new game, tool, or toy in over a year. Even his bourbon went from $40 bottles to the oversized $20 ones.
He wears his new frugality like a badge of honor to all who will listen because a part of him sees the writing on the wall.
As the bravado fell away and we had a real conversation it became clear that That Guy was terrified of being let go.
That crippling fear 😫 made him coil in on himself, withdraw from friends and family, stop speaking up at meetings and sometimes he didn’t show up at all.
Worse, his colleagues noticed. They commented on his lack of comments. They made attempts to draw him out and get him talking again. Then they stopped. They had given up on him as he had given up on himself.
Somewhere along the line, That Guy lost the script and became completely disconnected from what value he brought.
Other than knowing a bunch about the company’s history he had no redeeming qualities to speak of. How could he possibly stand out in a crowded market of other desperate job seekers?
Let’s cut to the chase. There were several junctions where That Guy could have pulled out of this spin. He had support. All he had to do was ask.
🙅♂️It didn’t need to be like this for him.
A common theme for the tech managers we see winning in their careers…
…even right now with all of the craziness of 2020…
…is that at one point they did the bravest thing anyone can do.
🆘 They asked for help! 🆘
While many pile more and more on themselves and wear the scars like trophies — a select few stepped out of the spiral and did the hard work of getting help.
This is what our clients did.
Despite the same challenges that everyone else had, they’re getting new expansive roles, promotions, and finding hope. They are rising above the challenges. 💪
