Have you ever been told that if you want to land that promotion, raise, or new job…you need to move slowly and methodically?
Let me save you some hard work and aggravation.
In my former life as a researcher and data analyst, I tried that exact same strategy.
I moved very thoughtfully.
I made sure all of my i’s were dotted and t’s were crossed on my resume.
I even spent extra time practicing for interviews before I applied for jobs.
See, I believed that if I just took the extra time to get everything perfect…then I would land my Hell Yes job.
I mean, that’s what they tell you, right?
But what really happened?
I didn’t land that Hell Yes job.
Someone LESS qualified than me got the job because she moved faster.
I missed out on a MAJOR opportunity to work at Harvard as a researcher.
I was pissed off, heart-broken, and felt like a shell of myself.
Then I asked myself ONE question — what would happen if I stopped moving methodically to try to get everything perfect…and started moving faster and more purposely instead?
I hit the reset button and re-connected to my core purpose of landing a Hell Yes job where I can be connected with world-class researchers while I up-leveled my tech, analysis, and leadership skills.
I valued SPEED over strength. That’s what helped me to break through to the next level.
I quickly found out about a position at Boston University School of Medicine and applied for it immediately.
I personally connected with the hiring manager and he invited me for an interview the NEXT day!
I put perfection aside and, even though I was nervous, showed up for that interview with intention, power, and grace.
And I was offered the job the SAME day!
I said yes and that job at B.U.S.M. was a key catapult for my career and future possibilities.
If I kept doing the “slow and steady” thing, I would have missed out on this MASSIVE career opportunity.
When you’re looking for a new job — either internally or externally — slow and steady does NOT win the race!
Speed is more important than strength in this game.
Of course, you don’t want to sacrifice your integrity or present yourself sloppily.
That’s why it’s CRUCIAL to get the help you need to win that raise, promotion, or new job.
