Have you ever been told that if you want to advance in your tech career…you just need to put your head down and do the work?
Let me save you some hard work and aggravation.
About 15 years ago, I tried that exact same strategy.
I worked by butt off. Work was my life and I did it ALL on my own.
I rarely asked for help.
I took “put your head down” a bit too literally and my belief was, “If I can’t do this on my own, I’m a failure.”
See, I believed if I just mastered leadership on my own…then I would get massive amounts of praise and a promotion to go with it.
I mean, that’s what they tell you, right?!
But what really happened?
I felt overwhelmed. I worked way too many hours. I felt isolated.
And for a minute, I did score some project wins…but that didn’t last because I had very little external support.
I conditioned myself to get it ALL done on my own! As soon as the urge to send an email to ask for help came up — I pushed it aside.
“No!” I’d say to myself. “I got this!”
And when my husband would suggest that I reach out to others for support, I got SO angry at him!
“No!” I’d say to him. “I can do this on my own! Don’t you have any faith in me?”
The reality was, I was losing faith in myself and I wasn’t advancing my career. I was falling behind.
Way behind. 😥
Then I asked myself ONE question…
What would happen if I stopped trying to do everything on my own…and started building a kick-ass support tribe instead?
When that urge to get support came up, I didn’t ignore it.
I sent that email. I asked for help!
When I was struggling with big decisions about my career or about major projects, I wouldn’t try to figure it out on my own.
I’d walk across the hall, knock on my boss’s door, and ASK her for advice!
I built a tribe of heroes! My projects were no longer solo undertakings.
I found the dream work in teamwork — and I was the fearless leader!
And not just for work projects. In my CAREER as well!
I found kick-ass mentors who’ve been there and done that. I learned from their mistakes so I didn’t have to make them.
And in less than a year, I was able to get that promotion with the resounding support of senior leaders!
They sang my praises. 🤩 It felt so satisfying! Especially because they were amazed at how much I was able to accomplish.
I remember smiling and saying, “Thank you. I didn’t do it alone.”
And, within another year, I was able to build up so much of a support network that I was able to launch a successful business…
…and bring that business to multiple six-figures in revenue in 2 years!
That’s unheard of in the coaching business! (Most coaches earn 50k/year or less).

🙅I didn’t put my head down and struggle.
I ACTIVELY seek help every day!
