How To Be a Completely Adequate Tech Entrepreneur

I’m going to be brutally honest.

I’m terrible at marketing. I’ll get better. But right now I wish I had thousands of dollars to spend on a professional marketing team. Because I have this product that I’m really excited about — a product that I KNOW will help the tech community — but no one is buying it.

I told you I was terrible at marketing. I’m supposed to talk about the INSANE response. How I’m SUPER excited about everyone who bought my online course. But I can’t do that. I can’t lie.

At this point, I don’t have enough data to know why my sales are a big fat goose egg. Maybe people are busy. Maybe they’re putting it off. Maybe I just need to wait a little longer. (I can be more than a tad impatient at times.)

I don’t know.

But what I do know is that I have to keep trying. This will be a long haul launch. I can do that. I can keep pushing.

Becuase I’m a completely adequate tech entrepreneur. I’m not one of those unicorns who launches her first product and gets hundreds and thousands of dollars in sales.

I’m one of those mere mortals who will bust my butt to spread the word and who will squeal like a little girl when I get my first sale.

I love the idea of being “completely adequate.” I got it from this article on I/O Psychologists. The gist of is that we’re sick of hearing about the unicorns. The superstars. How do “the rest of us” succeed?

“It takes 20 years to make an overnight success.” — Eddie Cantor

I’m still figuring out how to be an overnight success with my business, but I’ve learned some things along the way. To be a completely adequate (tech) entrepreneur you need to:

Simple, yes? Easy? Hell no.

Being a first-time entrepreneur is like being a first-time Space Mountain rider. There will be thrills. There will be chills, too. And you don’t know when either is coming.

Keep riding. Keep grinding.

“Just keep swimming.” — Dory from Finding Nemo

Because success IS around the corner.

Which corner?

I don’t know.

When will you get there?

I don’t know.

But I do know you won’t get there without trying.
