I recently had a career strategy session with a woman we’ll refer to as Alice.
Alice has led award-winning teams for over 15 years at software companies you’ve heard.
Right now, her boss doesn’t “see” Alice. Judging by the projects she has access to now, what he “sees” is a secretary or art assistant. He does not see Director material.
When this happened to Alice at other jobs, it left her feeling demotivated. She pulled back from the work and made a lateral move to another company.
After years of the same pattern, Alice is struggling to convince herself that it’s fine. Natural. Normal.
She even tells herself she’s lucky to have an abusive asshole boss because at least she’s working.
But It keeps happening. She sees others rocket past her, get praise for her work, and the benefits she should have earned.
Again. And Again. It must be her.
In fact, she believes her best bet is to keep plugging away and make her boss look good. With luck, he’ll get promoted out to another department and the next boss will be better.
For Alice, time is running out.
She’s played this game for 15 years and doesn’t have the pay, the title, or the retirement savings to show for it. Every day is getting harder.
Once a hard-charging, motivational leader, Alice is now a shell of her former self. It shows in her work. It shows in her life outside of work too.
Her partner and kids walk on eggshells in case mommy has a “moment.”
When they do get to spend time, Alice’s mind is elsewhere, fighting battles they can’t see.
They don’t feel the headaches that plague Alice every morning. They aren’t aware that it’s been weeks since she had a solid 8 hours of sleep. They don’t know that when she dreams, it’s interrupted by nightmares.
I’m not going to sugarcoat it: Tens of thousands of leaders live like this every day until they don’t.
Some quit by sucking it up and taking the repeated slaps to the face.
Some quit by buying the farm (literally or figuratively).
