All I see is all that I’ve seen
Is this really all there is?
Speaking with a friend the other day reminded me of how much we rely on the people around us to define our world.
What’s likely, what things mean, and what’s possible.
That’s great when your closest friends are aligned with your goals, push the boundaries of what’s possible, and encourage you to aim high.
But what happens when those around don’t see the same things for you? If they give you a hard time for trying too hard?
If they’re less committed to their dreams and more committed to their reasons they can’t have them?
Every day, I speak with tech managers who’ve lived in that soul crushing experience most of their careers.
They fold themselves smaller and smaller as the years go by.
Believing that it’s acceptable — normal even — to bounce from one reaction to the next, never exerting control over their lives.
40-hour workweeks, smooth product delivery, and a salary that lets them afford hobbies are all fairy tales for someone else. Someone privileged.
If you keep living like this, you’re going to fall into apathy. It is what it is. That’s life.
I know you’ve felt it. We all have, myself included.
And when you go there, the stress of 80 hour weeks, late night PagerDuty notifications, casual bickering with coworkers, and finger pointing at your leadership helps to distract you from the fact that you couldn’t afford a vacation even if you had the PTO.
Conversations with your family are best avoided. There you’d have to face how much of their lives you missed already. How much they’ve grown without you.
You push past the pain — strap in for another day — and toss a coin to the sunk cost fallacy that has become your life.
Next cycle, you’ll get that 3% raise and that extra $40 a week is really going to make a difference. Better still, you can get a promotion so you can spend more time making your boss look good.
Here’s the truth: If you don’t fix your career right now, this will remain your reality.
But it doesn’t have to be like this!
You can REFUSE to hunker down. REFUSE to listen to the old guard. REFUSE to simply do what you’re told.
This is the reality our clients have created!
They moved on to better paying jobs with fewer unreasonable demands and even happier coworkers.
They’re celebrating their promotions on LinkedIn, their vacations on Facebook, and spending time with the people they care about the most.
They’ve re-defined their reality — they’ve re-defined what’s possible — and in the process, they’ve built their dream careers.
They’ve built their dream lives!
Filled with impact, freedom, joy, and flow!
