Have you ever been told that if you want to advance in your tech career…you just need to put your head down and do the work?

Let me save you some hard work and aggravation.

About 15 years ago, I tried that exact same strategy.

I worked by butt off. Work was my life and I did it ALL on my own.

I rarely asked for help.

I took “put your head down” a bit too literally and my belief was, “If I can’t do this on my own, I’m a failure.”

See, I believed if I just mastered leadership on my own…then I would get massive amounts of praise and a promotion to go with it. …

Who do you surround yourself with?

Is it people who drag you down? They say you should just be happy with what you have?

They tell you to “play it safe?” And question your growth saying, “You’ve changed.”

Or…

…do you surround yourself with people to LIFT YOU UP? They encourage you to climb even higher!

Now that your priorities are clear — I talked about that on the last podcast — it’s time to say NO to everything that’s NOT a priority.

And I understand how challenging that can be.

Every day, you’re soaked with a tidal wave of messages, requests, demands, and must-do-now’s!

How is an authentic, assertive servant leader supposed to deal with all of these?

Welcome to 2021!

How are you feeling about the new year?

If you’re like most of the tech managers we help, you’re feeling good…to a point.

If you’re being honest with yourself, it’s mixed emotions.

You’re at least somewhat excited that it’s a new year but at the same time…

You can’t shake this feeling of lack. This feeling of settling. This feeling of being invisible.

You want to fix it and you simply CANNOT go another year like this!

You cannot go another year feeling under-recognized, under-valued, and overworked.

You want more freedom! You’re not in jail but sometimes you feel like it. …

What are your priorities for 2021?

What are the MAJOR categories — the BIG rocks — that you’re going to focus on?

Your health? Your relationships? Your career?

For most people, their career is not one of those major categories. And that’s a travesty!

If you don’t intentionally choose to make your career a priority, you’re missing out on major opportunities for advancement, personal growth, and more money!

Dear 2021, Please be better! 🙏

“I just want 2020 to be over already!”

“I am so DONE with 2020!”

“Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, 2020!”

“Please, 2021, be better than 2020!”

These are just a few of the New Year’s messages I’m seeing right now.

There’s no denying it: 2020 was a massively challenging year. One for the history books. 💯

We’ll be telling our grandkids about how we made it through 2020 despite a global pandemic, massive racial injustices, a crazy political season, and oh yeah, there were murder hornets!!!

All of this stuff happened. It’s all true. …

We talk about career upgrading all the time. Promotions, raises, more recognition.

So let’s talk about the opposite: Downgrading.

I know you don’t want to downgrade your career, but here’s the truth:

That’s what’s going to happen if you stay stuck!

Tech managers often think that the worst that can happen is they stay exactly where they are.

Actually, that’s not the worst! There’s way worse! Pay cuts. Demotions. Getting fired.

How do you avoid this?

It’s one thing to harbor doubts about your own capabilities.

It’s a whole other thing when those doubts are confirmed by your company’s leadership.

I spoke with a client this week we’ll call “Jeff.” Jeff knew, at some level, that he wasn’t ready for a bigger role yet.

What he didn’t realize was that his boss didn’t think he was ready for the role he had. 😐

He found out when they told him that they would be hiring a new level of leadership over him, to take over some of his duties.

This demotion caught him completely off guard.

While he didn’t think he was ready to move up, Jeff certainly didn’t think he needed to move down. …

We all have doubts. Doubts about ourselves, other people, the external world.

That’s normal and natural.

What I don’t want is for your doubts to continue to get confirmed.

I don’t want your self-doubt to turn into a stagnating salary or getting fired.

I don’t want your doubts about others to turn into relationships destroyed.

I don’t want your doubts about the world to turn into you staying stuck in a mediocre career.

How do you prevent this so you can build your dream tech career — even amid some doubts and challenges?
